As artist-in-residence at villa waldberta in bavaria, germany at the time, Simon Whetham had taken his recently reacquired guitar i'd bought aged 18 years old to see if i could be inspired by it with him. Various recording sessions with the guitar produced some nice sketches, but they had no direction or focus so he took a trip to the mountains and on walks with horst konietzny and lewis kaye and captured some great sounds feeling they were almost a soundtrack to this landscape. With this inspiration, on returning to the villa he composed with both the sketches and a few of the recordings to produce 'is the water supposed to be so blue?', named after a lovely photo lewis took of me recording said 'too blue' lake with my trusty aquarian hydrophone."
